New F INN First Round NFL Mock Draft (12/28)

2012 First Round NFL Mock Draft (12/28)

  1. Indianapolis - Andrew Luck (QB, Stanford) - I see a (more likely) scenario where the Colts trade Luck for more picks to bolster the roster immediately & still get Peyton's future successor.  Luck is the consensus #1 overall player. Can't predict trades, so the obvious choice is to leave Luck as the top pick.
  2. St. Louis - Justin Blackmon (WR, Oklahoma State) - Rams should re-sign Brandon Lloyd, but Bradford needs all the help he can get.  Blackmon is a physical nightmare for corners. Combined w/ Lloyd, it could be a dangerous assignment for defenses in the NFC West.
  3. Minnesota - Matt Kalil (OT, USC) - Kalil has decided to enter the NFL Draft.  This was the right choice because he's the highest rated OT, and a sure top five pick.  Minnesota can now protect Ponder's blindside for the next 10 years.  WR or even CB is also an option.
  4. Tampa Bay - Morris Claiborne* (CB, LSU) -  Tampa is in need of some serious philosophy changes.  They'll probably look at their roster and see the talent is way better than a team with the fourth overall pick in the draft.  In doing so, they'll likely go best player available (BPA).  Claiborne fits that bill.  Their secondary could use an upgrade anyway, so taking the best DB makes since here.
  5. Cleveland - Trent Richardson* (RB, Alabama) - Man what a beast! Peyton Hillis could be moving on with what looks like to be an ugly ending.  Hey Mike Holmgren, want Browns fans on your side still?  Replace him with Richardson.  He's a beast!  He can do it all.  And he does it with explosion.  Whether it's going through the hole, over a defender, passed a defender, making plays out of the backfield or pass protection
  6. Jacksonville - Alshon Jeffery* (WR, South Carolina) - Jaguars need a stud in the passing game to provide a balanced attack on offense and another playmaker to relieve Jones-Drew of some pressure.  Jeffery is a red zone target with great hands.  He's just what they need.
  7. Washington - Robert Griffin III* (QB, Baylor) - Smooth, athletic QB with a live arm.  He's taken Baylor to heights it's never been in school history.  Shanahan needs a QB in Washington badly.  He doesn't usually like rookies but how can you not be stoked at the opportunity to coach this kind of talent?
  8. Miami - Sam Montgomery* (DE/OLB, LSU) -   A pass rushing terror!  He's is the most explosive player on a defensive line full of explosion.  His burst stands out.  Miami could draft Montgomery and transition him into a Rush LB.  If Cameron Wake can gets Montgomery as the rusher opposite him, what a tandem this could be...
  9. Buffalo - Melvin Ingram (DE/LB, South Carolina) - Buffalo has an excellent, young secondary. They drafted Marcel Dareus to aid the run game last year (although they need more pieces).  This year Buffalo goes with a pick that will help them sack the opposing quarterback. Melvin Ingram is a stud.  He has speed off the line and surprising strength.  He can stand up in a 3-4 or line down as a base end in a 4-3.
  10. Kansas City - Jonathan Martin* (OT, Stanford) - The Chiefs need to rebuild the left side of their O-line.  Martin would be a great choice with Kalil already off the board.  He loves to run block but also has the length and feet to excel in pass protection.
  11. Carolina - Dre Kirkpatrick* (CB, Alabama) - Carolina could look at WRs here or they could look at DTs as well.  I think they will go with another standout player in this draft.  Their maybe no equal from an athletic standpoint to Kirkpatrick in this draft.  He's so long (6'3) and fast (sub 4.3).
  12. San Diego - Luke Kuechly (Boston College) - The Chargers need heart.  The need a leader.  They someone who can come in and change the mentality of the team without stealing any of Rivers' thunder... How about the tackling machine from BC, Luke Kuechly?  He plays with passion and intensity and will fit the defense perfectly.
  13. Chicago - Michael Floyd (WR, Notre Dame) - Jay Cutler is screaming for an elite receiver from his couch right now.  The Bears are a playoff team, but if they ever want to be a Super Bowl team, their offense has to consist of more than just passes to your running back.  Floyd will give them a legit #1 option in the passing game.
  14. Seattle - Quinton Coples (DE, North Carolina) - Pete Carroll knows you have to dominate the trenches before you can have the success you want.  He'll grab this jumbo defensive to help his back seven.
  15. Philadelphia - Vontaze Burflict* (MLB, Arizona State) - This guy is a terror.  He has spurts where he is Patrick Willis-esque.  A true MLB would go miles for the Eagles' D.
  16. Arizona - Riley Reiff (OT, Iowa) - Arizona needs a Left Tackle.  Reiff needs an NFL team.  He comes with good size, great feat and a nasty streak to match.
  17. Dallas - Janoris Jenkins (CB, North Alabama) - Cowboys need secondary help badly.  A shutdown corner would go a long way in improving that defense.  Jerry Jones will draft Jenkins hoping he becomes Rob Ryan's version of Darrelle Revis.
  18. Cincinnati (f/ Oakland) - David DeCastro (OG, Stanford) - This guy is a terror in the run game. He reminds me Steve Hutchinson when I watch him play.  His feet are so good, you almost want to play him at tackle.  That is until you see the aggressiveness and nasty streak he plays with.  He has guard writtin all over him.  That's a good thing too.  The Bengals love balance in their offense.
  19. Tennessee -  Mark Barron (SS, Alabama) - Mark Barron is a game-changing safety.  He can play free or strong safety, and play them well.  He's a hard hitter, who excels in coverage as well.  He will give the Titans secondary much needed versitility, leadership and play making ability.
  20. NY Jets - Courtney Upshaw* (DE/LB, Alabama) - Calvin Pace is nothing special and Aaron Maybin plays well in spurts.  Rex Ryan hasn't had a consistent pass rusher since arriving in New York.  They'll draft the premier pass rusher in the SEC and hope it gives them the boost they're looking for.
  21. Denver - Alonzo Dennard (CB, Nebraska ) - Dennard is a solid corner that excels in man and zone coverages.  The Broncos have an aging secondary.  Denver realizes they won't have Champ Bailey forever so they take a player that can be groomed to be the #1 corner in a couple years.
  22. NY Giants - Zach Brown (OLB, North Carolina) - They need linebackers in the worst way.  They have a solid defense but no real sideline to sideline tacklers.  Once they get that issue solved, I expect the G-Men to have a Top 5 defense yearly.
  23. Cincinnati - David Wilson* (RB, Virginia Tech) - Trent Richardson has already shaken Roger Goodell's hand, received his number and playbook.  The Bengals will "settle" for David Wilson.  This guy is a burner.  He has vision and balance.  He will excel behind the mauling offensive line of Cincinnati.
  24. Cleveland (f/ Atlanta) - Brandon Thompson (DT, Clemson) - As they transition back to a 4-3 defense, they need to add the personnel along the front seven. Thompson is a monster who could play one-tech or 3-tech in a 4-3.  He'll be welcomed by the LB corps.
  25. Detroit - Mike Adams (OT, Ohio State) - If Detroit can find secondary help with this pick, they could very well go defensive back.  Right now, Adams is their best bet because they need help at tackle and it's not a reach pick at all.  They'll look for secondary player in round two in this scenario.
  26. Houston - Alameda Ta'amu (NT, Washington) - Wade Phillips is doing quite well as coordinator for the Texans.  Cushing and Ryans are two stud LBs who will benefit greatly from a true NT lined up to demand double teams.  No brainer for Houston.
  27. Pittsburgh - Cordy Glenn (OG, Georgia) - A massive guard.  Pittsburgh has lost some of the old ground-n-pound run game it used to be known for.  By selecting Glenn, they'd place him next to Pouncey and help the runshing attack.
  28. Baltimore - Dont'a Hightower (LB, Alabama) - The Ravens know Ray Lewis isn't going to around much longer.  They select Hightower to be Lewis' eventual replacement.  Hightower will bide his time playing inside and out (maybe rushing opposite of Suggs on third downs) until Ray Lewis retires.
  29. San Francisco - Ray Ray Armstrong* (SS, Miami) - Armstrong is a freakish athlete who will only get better with time.  He can play free or strong safety.  He covers deep and can come into the box to be another linebacker.  He will fit perfectly with the hard hitting defensive unit of the Niners.
  30. New England (f/ New Orleans) - Stephon Gilmore* (CB, South Carolina) - Even with some young players starting to produce, New England still needs help at cornerback.  Look no further than Stephon Gilmore.  He's a natural athlete with both man and zone coverage abilities.  He has a knack for making plays, which is something all coaches covet.
  31. New England - Reuben Randle* (WR, LSU) - As long as New England has Tom Brady so their passing game won't need any major help, but they could use help with the vertical game.  Brady's main targets are a 5'9 possession slot receiver and two tight ends.  Randle will come in with the size on the outside along with the speed to make a difference.
  32. Green Bay - Jarvis Jones* (OLB, Georgia) - Green Bay doesn't need much but a true pass rusher that is familiar with the 3-4 could boost their sometimes sketchy defense.  Jones is athletic and relentless in pursuit of the QB and would excel in the Dom Capers 'Cover 7' 3-4.

NFL Playoff Race

NFL Playoff Race

1. New England (12-3)*
2. Houston (10-4)*
3. Baltimore (11-4)*
4. Denver (8-7)
5. Pittsburgh (11-4)*
6. Cincinnati (9-6)

Outside Looking In:
NY Jets (8-7)
Oakland (7-7)
Tennessee (7-7)

Overview:

New England has finally separately itself from the pack.  New England has clinched the East Division and a first round bye.  Baltimore has the inside track for the other bye, gaining the #2 seed with a win. Pittsburgh will need a Baltimore loss and a win to have the #1 seed and a bye in the first round of playoffs.   Houston is locked in to the #3 seed no matter what happens week 17.  The fourth divison race is in the Wild Wild West.  Denver controls their destiny with Oakland needing a win AND a Denver loss to win the West.  Oakland can also win the wild card if Cincinnati and Tennessee lose OR Cincinatti loses and NY Jets win. San Diego and Kansas City both had their bubbles burst Week 16.

1. *Green Bay (14-1)
2. *San Francisco (12-3)
3. *New Orleans (12-3)
4. NY Giants (8-7)
5. *Detroit (10-5)
6. *Atlanta (9-6)

Outside Looking In:

 Dallas (8-7)

Overview

Green Bay Packers have the #1 seed, clinching home field (and a 1st round bye) throughout.  The Niners are barely holding on to the #2 seed which would give them a bye in the 1st round as well.  #3 seed, New Orleans (who have clinched the South) is virtually one game back of San Francisico because the tie-breaker goes to the Niners.  Dallas and NY Giants will play in a game that ends the loser's season and sends the victor to the playoffs via winning the East Division.  Detroit has made it in as a wild card with their thrashing of the Chargers.  Atlanta has also secured an automatic birth in the (wild card) playoffs.  Arizona and Seattle are no longer in playoff contention.  Also Philly has been mathematically eliminated.

  7. Buffalo - Sam Montgomery* (DE/OLB, LSU) - Buffalo went defense with their pick last year (Marcel Dareus), they'll do it again this year.  This time they boost their pass rush.  LSU has the most impressive defensive front in football.  They rotate eight guys but they have one the stands out more than any other.  Sam Montgomery.  He's a nightmare off the edge.  He's strong at the point of attack and relentless in pursuit.
  8. Miami - Robert Griffin III* (QB, Baylor) - Smooth, athletic QB with a live arm.  He's taken Baylor to heights it's never been in school history.  He'll fit nicely in Miami with their smash mouth OL and versatile running back, Reggie Bush. Home run pick!
  10. Washington - Mark Barron (SS, Alabama) - The Redskins need a leader. Barron is exactly that.  He leads by example.  His game is aggression and discipline.  He'll provide stability to the back end of the Skins' D.
  11. Kansas City - Jonathan Martin* (OT, Stanford) - The Chiefs need to rebuild the left side of their O-line.  Martin would be a great choice with Kalil already off the board.  He loves to run block but also has the length and feet to excel in pass protection.

  13. Tennessee - Quentin Coples (DE, North Carolina) - Tennessee has Derrick Morgan but it won't stop them from adding another quality defensive end.  Coples is huge at 6'6 and weighing almost 280 lbs.  He's a run stopper who can get to the quarterback with speed or power.

Is Tebow Hype or Hope?

Tebow: Hype or Hope?

As soon as Tim Tebow's college career ended, the debate on whether or not he can be an NFL quarterback has taken the league by storm.  Since entering the game in Week 5 in relief of Kyle Orton, Tebow has been moving the NFL "meter."  He has a chance to be a savior of a franchise that has needed one since John Elway.

If you watch "First Take" on ESPN2 daily like I do, other than Skip Bayless, there's one constant... Tim Tebow!  It seems like at least half there topics are discussing Tim Tebow.  As a starter this year, Tebow is a remarkable 7-1.  It's not often that a quarterback has that type of winning percentage, with so many questions still remaining about whether or not he's a quality NFL quarterback.  Tebow has done everything needed to be successful, obviously.  It's the way he's done those things that brings debate.  He's running a lot of the spread option (that supposedly doesn't work in the NFL) that also helped make him a star at Florida.  His completion percentage is nowhere near starting caliber, much less a "pro bowl" level.  He often goes long stretches of the game without a completion.

There's one thing that does stand out.  He has six fourth quarter or overtime game-winning drives.   But it's not like he's doing it by himself.  Willis McGahee is seemingly revitalized next to Tebow.  Denver's defense needs a large amount of credit for giving him a chance to win ball games late.  Kicker, Matt Prater, also has been drilling every kick in crunch time.  These bring up two huge questions.  Where were they when Kyle Orton was starting?  And is Tim Tebow inspiring them to play this kind of football?  If you believe the answer is "yes" to the second question, then Tebow is worth more points than what shows on the scoreboard and is rightfully getting most of the credit.  If your answer is "no," then you either believe it's luck or God has something to do with it.

This is where it gets confusing.  There's an old saying: "I'd rather be lucky than good anyday."  If you believe in luck, you are likely to believe luck eventually runs out or wears off.  In that case, executive vice president John Elway would be smart to look for "good" quarterback instead of a "lucky" one.

If you believe God has something to do with it, you've probably asked yourself, "Why would God waste time on football? Or maybe why would he favor Tim Tebow over Christians he's playing against?"  Many people think God doesn't pick winners and losers in sports.  I tend to agree.  But what if this is bigger than sports?  What if God has decided to take a strong, high-character individual like Tim Tebow, and use him for his glory?  Tebow has said before that he gets to use football as a "platform" to profess his faith.  The NFL has become this multi-billion dollar business and football in general, is now (like it or not baseball fans) America's pastime.  Each time Tebow defies the odds and brings his team back, he's gets another week on ESPN and radio waves all over.  They ask him about God, and he gladly answers.  They show teams in "prayer circles" after the game.  (They have those after almost every game, but it's only showed when Tebow's in it. Coincidence?)  Also, the quarterback position has become unlike any other position in any sport.  It is the face of the team more often than not.  It gets the blame for losing and the credit for winning.  His career gets extended that much longer with each miraculous victory.  Why wouldn't God use an intriguing player, like Tebow who plays the most popular sport in the United States?  I'm not saying this is exactly what is going on but if you're a Christian, like me, I don't see why it wouldn't be in the realm of possibility for you.  And if you are not a Christian, maybe God is using football to show you how he works.

So, is Tebow hype or hope?  It's really too soon to tell.  All I know is it'll be a great game this Sunday when New England comes to town.  So, in the words of Terrell Owens, "Get ya popcorn ready!"  Let's all sit back and enjoy the show.

Matt Kalil Will Enter Draft *UPDATED* **UPDATED AGAIN**

Matt Kalil is tall, strong, athletic and dominating. Maybe more so than any offensive tackle in the nation.  He is also "set to return" for his senior season at Southern Cal.  No doubt Lane Kiffin has a grin on his face from ear to ear right now.

To be honest, I'm a little shocked by this.  Many (including me) had Kalil graded as the best tackle in the upcoming NFL Draft and a top 5 pick.  He's 6-7 and weighs 300 pounds with frame to add an additional twenty to twenty five if he wants or needs to.

Now, many are wondering what this means, anything, for teammate, Matt Barkley.  Only time will tell, but having your blindside protected for another year could add incentive to return.  Barkley could be the front-runner for the 2012 Heisman and top overall pick 2013's draft.

***UPDATE***Matt Kalil said his mind has not yet been made, despite reports.  I’m not close to making a decision. That will probably happen in the next  couple weeks,” Kalil said. “No decision has been made. I just started thinking about the process I’m going to go through to make the decision.”

***UPDATE #2*** Kalil has indeed decided to enter the 2012 NFL Draft.  We think it's a wise choice.  Next up: Matt Barkley.

Week 14 NFL Power Rankings

Week 14 NFL Power Rankings

  1. Green Bay (13-0)- On the surface, Green Bay look unbeatable.  I think if you dig a little deeper, you may find they are, indeed, unbeatable.  A high powered offense is even more deadly with a defense that is fast and forces plenty turnovers, leading the league in interceptions.  Get out of their way.
  2. New Orleans (10-3) - Sean Payton has the offense in gear.  They are playing as perfect as a team (not named Green Bay) can right now.
  3. Pittsburgh (10-3) - The Steelers are doing what they do.  Playing their best ball as the post-season approaches.  Big Ben was hurt last game though.  If they can get healthy before playoffs, look out!
  4. Baltimore (10-3) - They play well against good teams and play bad against bad teams.  Well, in the playoffs, all the teams are good.
  5. New England (10-3) - Tom Brady has the Patriots on a roll.  If the defense comes around, you could be looking at the AFC Champs.
  6. San Francisco (10-3) - Man, what a defense.  And what a run game to lean on.  Jim Harbaugh quickly has the team thinking championship.
  7. Houston (10-3) - Schaub goes down. Andre Johnson goes down (again).  That's okay because they have the best run game in the NFL and a revamped Wade Phillips 3-4 defense.  With Yates coming along, they could look to damage in the post-season.
  8. NY Giants (7-6) - Big win in Big D on Sunday. This team controls it's on destiny in the NFC East.
  9. NY Jets (8-5) - Love him or hate him.  Rex Ryan can get this Jets "machine" rolling at just the right time.
  10. Denver (8-5) - Tim Tebow is creating gigantic waves around the league with his unique style and leadership.  Denver's defense has come on strong during their run thanks to Elvis Dumervil and, rookie, Von Miller's pass rushing abilty.
  11. Detroit (8-5) - Detroit narrowly held on to a win this week.  They'll have to play better if they won't a wild card.
  12. Atlanta (8-5) - Acquired Julio Jones in a "Super Bowl or bust" type maneuver.  Right now, maintaining their wild card and getting to the playoffs will be a challenge.
  13. Dallas (7-6) - Tough loss to Arizona. Tougher loss to the Giants.  They'll have to scratch and claw to regain post-season positioning
  14. Chicago (7-6) - Without Cutler and Forte, the Bears will need to lean on their stout defense to keep playoff hopes alive.
  15. Oakland (7-6) - They were dismantled by the best team in football and it hurt more than their ego. With Denver winning, their playoff hopes are starting to fade.
  16. Cincinnati (7-6) - Their schedule has finally caught up with them as this surprise team is trying to vie for one of two wild cards.
  17. Tennessee (7-6) - Chris Johnson is finally looking like CJ2K once again.  They're making a bid at a wild card spot.
  18. San Diego (6-7) - The Bolts looked like their old selves last week.  Efficient run game and explosive passing led to an easy win.
  19. Seattle (6-7) - They've decided to go "Beast Mode" for four quarters and it is paying off big time.
  20. Arizona (6-7) - This Cardinals' got off to a poor start but the talent is their.  Now they're showing what they were capable by beating San Francisco.  They won't be an easy "out" for the rest of the season.
  21. Philadelphia (5-8) - Mike Vick is back.  Maybe Philly will play good enough to save Andy Reid's job prove they are worthy of the attention they received.
  22. Miami (4-9) - This team has turned it around.  They're fast and aggressive.  And too late.  Maybe this will give them something to strive for in the offseason
  23. Buffalo (5-8) - "Fitzmagic" has worn off.  Fred Jackson has landed on IR.  The defense is being ripped apart weekly.
  24. Jacksonville (4-9) - MoJo is worth four wins a season apparently.
  25. Carolina (4-9) - Cam Newton is ridiculously talented.  He needs to cut down on the turnovers if he wants to be the elite quarterback his team needs him to be.
  26. Kansas City (5-8) - This team lost its two most important players (J. Charles and E. Berry) in the early going.  Todd Haley never could right the ship and it cost him his job.
  27. Tampa Bay (4-9) - Bucs were forced to not lean on Freeman for the first time all season.  Didn't fair well without him.  This team hasn't won since they played the Saints.
  28. Cleveland (4-9) - This is called a rebuilding year.
  29. Washington (4-9) - It's hard to tell if Shanny is losing it or has already lost it.  Either way, Washington's light is getting dimmer.
  30. Minnesota (2-11) - Fresh off getting Tebow'd, Minnesota had a chanced to win but didn't deliver. Joe Webb was impressive in relief action.
  31. St. Louis (2-11) - Was I crazy to think St. Louis only going to get better following last year's semi success?  Don't answer that.
  32. Indianapolis (0-13) - One more game and the Andrew Luck sweepstakes can be Indy's.

2012 First Round Mock Draft (12/12)

2012 NFL Mock Draft (12/5)

  4. Jacksonville - Morris Claiborne* (CB, LSU) -  Expect whoever the new regime in Jacksonville to give Blaine Gabbert a chance to be the franchise.  In doing so, they'll likely go best player available (BPA).  Claiborne fits that bill.  Their secondary could use an upgrade anyway, so taking the best DB makes since here.
  5. Cleveland - Quinton Coples (DE, North Carolina) - This is a massive physical marvel (6'6, 275) that can get after the quarterback. He's a natural 4-3 end that will help ease Cleveland's transition from a 3-4.
  6. Washington - Matt Barkley* (QB, USC) - This guy is the prototype QB.  He comes from a pro style offense and has a good arm.  Shanahan likes veteran QBs but will not be able to pass on a player with this much potential.  Barkley is the kind of player that could turn out to be a better player as a pro than he was in college.
  7. Tampa Bay - Dre Kirkpatrick* (CB, Alabama) - When I think of Dre, I think SWAG!  He's long (6'3) and athletic (4.3 forty).  Team him with Aqib Talib and can you imagine the size of that cornerback duo? Scary!
  9. Carolina - Alshon Jeffery (WR, South Carolina) - Carolina brass is probably still beating their chests over the electric franchise changing first pick of last year's draft.  They'd love for this to be the ultimate success story so they'll look to get him a red zone and third down weapon.  Look no further than Alshon Jeffery.  He is a big bodied, physical receiver with great hands.  Some character and weight concerns may keep him from going this high but unlikely.
  10. Kansas City - Trent Richardson* (RB, Alabama) - Most people would mock a DL or LB to the Chiefs.  Richardson falling to the eleventh could be too appealing.  KC has been all over SEC talent in recent years.  The uncertainty of Charles' knee injury could make Richardson even more enticing.  He's a strong, smart do-it-all back who can carry the load or complement Charles.  Either way, it's a great pick.
  11. Buffalo - Jonathan Martin* (OT, Stanford) - Not sure if Buffalo believes in "Fitzmagic" or not but if they do, they better keep him upright.   With Matt Kalil's decision to stay in college another, this elevates Martin to the status of best tackle in the draft.  He loves to run block but also has the length and feet to excel in pass protection.
  12. Philadelphia - Vontaze Burflict* (MLB, Arizona State) - This guy is a terror.  He has spurts where he is Patrick Willis-esque.  A true MLB would go miles for the Eagles' D.
  13. Arizona - Riley Reiff* (OT, Iowa) - Arizona is a team with plenty of talent.  They need just a few pieces here and there.  One of those pieces is a left tackle.  They'll tab the long, agile Riley Reiff in hopes that he becomes their blindside protector.
  14.  Seattle - Melvin Ingram (DE, South Carolina) - Pete Carroll has this team playing some mean defense.  He could choose to draft the quick rising, Melvin Ingram and pair him with Chris Clemons to form a dominating pass rush.  The defense could go from mean to nasty with move.
  16. Tennessee - Mark Barron (SS, Alabama) - On paper, the Titans don't look too bad.  Don't really have many glaring holes, the problem is there are no game-changers on the defensive side of the ball.  I look for them to go BPA w/ this pick... Honestly, it could be anyone.
  18. Cincinnati - David Wilson* (RB, Virginia Tech) - They would've loved to land Trent Richardson, but as it turned out, their season was just too good for that to happen.  However, Wilson is not a bad fall back option.  He is a back with great balance and crazy explosion. He can catch out of the backfield as well. He'll work well with Cedric Benson while he learns to be an every down back (blocking).
  19. Chicago - Michael Floyd (WR, Notre Dame) - You can debate whether or not this is the receiver the Bears take w/ their first round pick but it will be a receiver no doubt.  Floyd is a big red zone target the Bears' offense is lacking.
  20. Dallas - Cordy Glenn (OG, Georgia) - Dallas will take the mammath guard with this pick.  He's a world-mover.  Murray & Jones will run behind with great success giving Jerry Jones flashbacks of the ol' Larry Allen days.
  21. NY Giants - Dont'a Hightower(LB, Alabama) - The Giants need a natural middle linebacker in the worst way.  They fly around with a quartet of defensive ends to the quarterback.  When Prince Amukamara becomes healthy, they'll have a dynamic secondary.  Fill Dont'a "Zeus" Hightower in the middle and the Giants are instant contenders.  Hightower is a jumbo LB that brings the whole load when he hits you.
  22. Detroit - Janoris Jenkins (CB, North Alabama) - Man do these guys need help in their secondary or what?  They could go w/ an all secondary draft and still not have enough help.  Louis Delmas is the only player they have back there worth anything.  Jenkins is the most talented player in the secondary available. They'll select him knowing it's BOOM or BUST!
  25. NY Jets - T. J. McDonald (FS, USC) - It's about time the Jets get someone to rush the passer effectively.  With that said, I fully expect Rex Ryan & co. to select another DB.  This time they go safety.  McDonald is an athletic safety who can cover deep or play some man which Rex will love.
  26. Houston - Alameda Ta'amu (NT, Washington) - Wade Phillips is doing quite well as coordinator for the Texans.  Cushing and Ryans are two stud LBs who will benefit greatly from a true NT lined up to demand double teams.  No brainer for Houston.
  27. San Francisco - Reuben Randle (WR, LSU) - Dynamite receiver. He's both a deep threat and red zone option.  He can be a posession receiver and is good after the catch.  He's a little raw but has come into his own this season.
  28. New England - Barrett Jones* (OL, Alabama) - Is there a more versatile lineman in the country? Doubt it.  Is there a team in the NFL that appreciates versatility the Patriots? Doubt it.  Pats could ease a lot of pain and add flexibility to their OL with this selection. Mark it down.  If Jones comes out, he's a Patriot.
  29. Baltimore - Ray Ray Armstrong* (SS, Miami) - Ray Ray Armstrong has the perfect football name.  He also has the size/speed combo that NFL GM's covet.  He was suspended for a majority of the 2011 football season.  One team that will tend to gamble a little, is the Ravens.  They went with Sergio Kindle, Terrence Cody and Jimmy Smith in recent drafts, so Armstrong likely won't scare Baltimore off
  30. Pittsburgh - Stephon Gilmore* (CB, South Carolina) - The Steelers are all of a sudden running more man-to-man coverages.  If this is a trend, not a blip, then I assume they will be looking for corners.  Look no further than Stephon Gilmore.  He's a natural athlete with both man and zone coverage abilities.  He has a knack for making plays, which is something Dick Lebeau, like all coaches, really covets.
  31. New England (f/ New Orleans) - Zach Brown (OLB, North Carolina) - The 4-3 switch hasn't gone as seemless as some people would have expected.  Mainly due to the OLBs and defensive ends taking on different skill sets.  He needs OLB with better coverage skills but still effective in the run game. Enter Zach Brown.  He flies around like a young Keith Bulluck.  Place this guy in the lineup beside Meyo and he could really excel.
  32. Green Bay - Courtney Upshaw (OLB, Alabama) - GB is without a doubt the best team in the world!  An undefeated championship season could be on the brink.  They don't need anything else but a true pass rusher that is familiar with the 3-4 could boost their sometimes sketchy defense.  Upshaw is relentless in pursuit of the QB and would excel in the Dom Capers 'Cover 7' 3-4

Robert Griffin III is Voted Heisman Trophy Winner

Robert Griffin III Is Voted Heisman Winner

Robert Griffin III is the winner of the 2011 Heisman Trophy.  This year's Heisman race had an ever-changing front runner as the weeks passed.  Andrew Luck started out the year as the favorite but others such as Russell Wilson, Brandon Weeden and Marcus Lattimore all saw their names atop the unofficial Heisman leader boards.

The names came and went.  Only five remained by season's end.  Two quarterbacks (Griffin and Luck), two running backs (Trent Richardson and Montee Ball) and one defensive player (DB Tyrann Mathieu).  Each player displaying the talent to be winner with the numbers to back it up.

One player stood above them all.  The man they call RG3.  He started his Heisman campaign in the seaon opener vs TCU where he threw for 359 yards with five touchdowns to only six incompletions.  INCOMPLETIONS.

He never looked back.  He compiled ridiculously eye-popping stats throughout the season.  He ended the season with just shy of 4,000 yards and 47 combined touchdowns.  That was enough to become Baylor's first Heisman winner in the history of the program.  Congratulations, Mr. Griffin.  You've played "outstanding."

Who is Mel Tucker?

Who Is Mel Tucker?

Jack Del Rio is gone.  So who's replacing him? Mel Tucker gets first shot at becoming the new head coach in Jacksonville.  So, let's see if we can find out a little bit about him.

Before becoming Interim Head Coach, Tucker was serving as defensive coordinator for the Jags.  This is the first year he is calling plays and his defensive unit is currently ranked fourth in totals yards per game and fifth in points per game.  Not too bad.

Let's go to the beginning.  He played defensive back at the University of Wisconsin.  In 1997, he became a graduate assistant at Michigan State under Nick Saban.  He coached defensive backs for two years at Miami of Ohio before joining Saban on the LSU staff in 2000.  His first defensive coordinator job came in 2004, at Ohio State under Jim Tressel.  He served as DB coach from '01 - '03 before becoming co-defensive coordinator.

Tucker moved to the NFL in 2005 coaching defensive backs with the Cleveland Browns through the 2007 season.  He became Cleveland's defensive coordinator under Romeo Crennel in 08.  They were fifth in the league in total yards.  Which brings us to Jacksonville.  He's been with the Jaguars since 2009.

He has a background in both 4-3 and 3-4 defenses.  He's learned from quality coaches.  Can he get the job done?  Maybe.  Is he capable of handling the load?  Time will tell.  Good luck, Mel.

  3. Minnesota - Alshon Jeffery* (WR, South Carolina) - Ok, Michael Jenkins isn't exactly turning heads in Minnesota.  Vikings need to fill the void left by Sidney Rice's departure from a year ago.  Alshon Jeffery is a monster.  Looks like a defensive end, only he catches extremely well.  His 2011 season didn't go as well as he hoped but he's still a force.  OT or even CB is also an option.

  10.  Philadelphia - Vontaze Burflict* (MLB, Arizona State) - This guy is a terror.  He has spurts where he is Patrick Willis-esque.  A true MLB would go miles for the Eagles' D.
  11. How about the tackling machine from BC, Luke Kuechly?  He plays with passion and intensity and will fit the defense perfectly.
  14. Buffalo - Riley Reiff* (OT, Iowa) - Not sure if Buffalo believes in "Fitzmagic" or not but if they do, they better keep him upright.  Reiff has the feet of a future pro bowl LT.  He's not a big guy but he has a frame to get bigger.  Plenty of upside with this pick.

  21. Chicago - Jeff Fuller (WR, Texas A&M) - You can debate whether or not this is the receiver the Bears take w/ their first round pick but it will be a receiver no doubt.  Fuller comes from a spread offense where he was the focal point.  He gave Patrick Peterson all he wanted in the 2010 Cotton Bowl.
  23. Cincinnati (f/ Oakland) - David DeCastro (OG, Stanford) - This guy is a terror in the run game. Enter Zach Brown.  He flies around like a young Keith Bulluck.  Place this guy in the lineup beside Meyo and he could really excel.
  29. Baltimore - Manti Teo (MLB, Notre Dame) - Ray Lewis' career is drawing closer.  Teo is big, athletic and comes at you like a freight train.  He's a run stopper who needs some work in coverage.  He can find time playing beside Mr. Lewis on 1st and 2nd downs while he waits for the keys.
  31. San Francisco - Reuben Randle* (WR, LSU) - Dynamite receiver. 49ers will bring huge play ability to the offense with this kid.  Sneaky fast.  Good player with plenty of untapped potential.
  32. Green Bay - Courtney Upshaw (OLB, Alabama) - GB is without a doubt the best team in the world.  An undefeated championship season could be on the brinks.  They don't need anything else but a true pass rusher that is familiar with the 3-4 could boost their sometimes sketchy defense.  Upshaw is relentless in pursuit of the QB and would excel in the Dom Capers 'Cover 7' 3-4

Matt Forte Has Sprained Knee

In a matter of weeks, Chicago has quickly turned into the "Bad News Bears." As Chicago is struggling to remain in the playoff hunt without quarterback, Jay Cutler, they're delivered more bad news.  RB Matt Forte is out with a sprained MCL.  The silver lining in this cloud is he should only be out 2 to 4 weeks.

If Chicago can stay in the playoff picture without him, he'd almost definitely be back for post-season play.  Of course, this could make contract talks a little more serious.  If Forte had torn an ACL or done something more dangerous than a "grade 2" sprain, he would've lost all leverage he had in signing a mega deal.

***Fantasy Impact*** The schedule is not too friendly for fantasy production as they play (@Den, Sea, @GB, and @Min).  Playoffs are coming, if you have Forte, grab Marion Barber.  If you have questions with your RBs, grab Marion Barber

Rolando McClain arrested

This is why some NFL franchises take such a hard stance, requiring players to remain with the team through the duration of the season.  Rolando McClain, 22, was granted permission by the Oakland Raiders to return to his hometown of Decatur, AL this week to attend his grandfather's funeral.  Too bad that's not all he did.

McClain was arrested and charged with third degree assault, reckless endangerment, and menacing and discharging a firearm within city limits.  According to the victim, McClain held the victim at gun point while the victim begged not to be shot.

McClain will probably miss this Sundays game against the Dolphins, as he already battling an ankle injury.  Still, he can expect to hear from the league about his arrest.

Seahawks' Russell Okung Out For Season

It was evident that Pete Carroll wanted to make his offensive line the cornerstone of his football team. By building it through the draft, and hiring Tom Cable to teach the zone blocking scheme, he had a full-proof plan to gel a young and talented unit.

Seattle has already their lost two rookie linemen due to knee injuries (OT James Carpenter, torn ACL and RG John Moffitt, torn MCL, PCL).  The big news is Russell Okung is now out for the season with a torn pectoral muscle.  It happened Thursday night in the 31 - 14 win over the Eagles.

This is a young offensive line with serious growing potential, but if they are going to grow, they need to get healthy first.
