My question... What if he does make those same dynamic plays? Does Seattle honestly go with the third round rookie quarterback as the starter? Matt Flynn, Green Bay's single-game passing yards record holder (okay, I just really wanted to use that), would still be a backup while being paid $7 million a year? Sorry Pete, I can't buy it. I love the competition theme. It worked at USC. Sorry Pete, this ain't college ball.
Matt Flynn has to be the starter. And I want my starter as confident as confident as possible heading into games. With Wilson getting a crack with the 1's, Flynn has too be a little uncomfortable. Imagine the rookie has a preseason game to remember. Andrew Luck style. Maybe Pete Carroll's plan is to end the competition by putting young Russell Wilson against one of the best secondaries in all of football. Or maybe he just really likes what he has in Wilson. I suppose it's possible Wilson is even better than they thought when they drafted him. Aside from being 5'10", Wilson had first round production in college. If he doesn't succeed tonight, at least Carroll showed his players he was honest about competition. That's big for a locker room.
Seattle could be looking to speed Wilson's learning curve by playing him against a real defense. He'll see the speed of the game and have film on his mistakes. Seattle fans have to be excited about Wilson's development thus far. If/when Russell Wilson takes that next step, Seahawks may have a bargain in one hand (Wilson) and a trading piece (Flynn) down the road.
