A few days after clearing large amounts of cap room by restructuring the contracts of Richard Seymour, Michael Huff, Aaron Curry and Carson Palmer the Raiders have parted ways with Kevin Boss.
Boss was signed to a four-year, $16 million deal just last offseason. The move only clears about $2 million of cap space. Oakland didn't see enough difference between Boss and backup Brandon Myers to justify a $4 million salary.
Fullback Marcel Reece has experience as a tight end (He actually played wide receiver at the University of Washington) and could be used more in that role if needed. Oakland also drafted tight ends Richard Gordon and David Ausberry in the 2011 draft. I expect the Raiders to bring in a veteran tight end a low cost to compete for a roster spot during training camp.
Last week, the team released cornerback Chris Johnson and safety Hiram Eugene. The moves saved over %5 million. The front office will have a busy offseason as it gets creative with player salaries and fills out a roster with only two current draft picks in this April's draft.
What's next for Kevin Boss? Free agency, of course. A reunion with the New York Giants could be coming. With tight ends Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum both tearing an ACL in the Super Bowl, Boss could be a free agent target for the G-Men.
