Is Calvin Johnson's New Contract Too Much? Even For Megatron?

Calvin "Megatron" Johnson has just landed a mega-deal.  The stud receiver just signed a seven-year, $132 million extension.  This is a deal that includes $60 million in guarantees.

Wow.  Consider me among the many that believe Johnson is the best receiver in the game.  This is a 6'5, 247 pound defensive back nightmare who also runs sub 4.4.  With all those impressive numbers to go along with his highlight reel catches, he is still one guy.  And we're talking about a wide receiver, not a quarterback.

It's obvious that he's Detroit's best player.  My apologies, Mr. Suh.  He's entering his prime so you feel good there, right?  No.  This is football.  Calvin Johnson has been prone to back injuries.  I hope he plays ten more years but he could become a shell of himself in one play.  As good as Megatron is, it took a full season from Matthew Stafford and a rebuilt defensive line to get Detroit to the playoffs.  It's a team game.

Megatron will probably lead the league in yards and touchdowns again.  He will torch defensive backs like we haven't seen since the days of Super Freak in Minnesota.  Houston had success without Andre Johnson for much of last year, right?  Nothing against the position of receiver but I've seen plenty receivers look terrible without a decent quarterback and have witnessed late-round and undrafted receivers record 1,000-yard seasons when paired with pro bowl quarterbacks.  I can't pay that kind of cash for a receiver, even if he is the leader of the Decepticons.
